What is Omega-3?
Omega-3 fatty acids, also called ω−3 fatty acids or n−3 fatty acids, are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). These fatty acids are essential for growth in young children and animals. They occur in two natural forms: triglycerides and phospholipids. Together with other fatty acids, they are bonded to glycerol in the triglycerides. Involved in human physiology are three types of omega-3 fatty acids: α-linolenic acid (ALA) from plant oils, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both found in marine oils.
As a major structural component, DHA is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the mammalian brain. DHA is produced by a desaturation process. Humans however, lack the desaturase enzyme needed to insert double bonds at the ω6 and ω3 position.
Therefore, these polyunsaturated fatty acids cannot be synthesized. Primary sources of omega-3 fatty acids are marine algae and phytoplankton. Some common sources for ALA are walnut, edible seeds, algal oil, flaxseed oil, and hemp oil. Sources of animal omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA include fish, fish oils, and krill oil.
What are the benefits?
Omega-3 fatty acids are important for the brain function and vision rely on dietary intake of DHA to support a broad range of cell membrane properties, particularly in the membrane-rich grey matter. Omega-3 fatty acids are present in foods and dietary supplements. They help keep the membranes that surround all cells in the body working. There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids:
- Alpha-linoleic acid (ALA)
- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
Alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) is mostly present in plant oils, such as flaxseeds, walnuts and chia seeds. EPA and DHA are mostly present in cold-water fatty fish, such as salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines. A person’s body can convert small amounts of ALA into EPA, and DHA.
